Shawn Wilkinson, an Atlanta-based software developer, established Storj in May 2014. He recognized the potential of using blockchain technology to create a decentralized cloud storage system. Alongside co-founder John Quinn, he released the initial white paper in late 2014. The project’s specifics have evolved since then, with the current iteration, V3, going live in mid-2019.
Quinn brought significant business development experience to the partnership, having previously worked in investment banking before launching his own ventures, including Storj. The entity was formally incorporated as Storj Labs Inc. in May 2015.
Wilkinson acted as CEO at the start but later transitioned to allow for more experienced leadership. Ben Golub currently holds the CEO position. Wilkinson now serves as chief strategy officer (CSO), while Quinn is the chief revenue officer (CSO) and sits on the board.
Financially, the platform secured 910 bitcoin (valued at approximately $460,000) through a public crowd-sale in 2014. Three years after that, it obtained $3 million in seed funding. Later that same year, a token sale brought in an additional $30 million.
