Wrapped BNB mirrors Binance Coin to enable decentralized finance activities on the BNB Smart Chain and other networks. Created by Binance, it allows users to bridge assets for yield farming or trading while maintaining a one-to-one backing with locked BNB. The circulating supply fluctuates based on usage, as tokens are minted or burned through smart contracts without a fixed limit.
Wrapped BNB (WBNB) is a token that mirrors the value of Binance Coin (BNB), the primary asset of the Binance exchange. Operating on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC)—a network designed for smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps)—WBNB adheres to the BEP-20 standard. Much like wrapped ETH (WETH) or wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), it enables BNB holders to engage in DeFi activities, including yield farming, supplying liquidity to pools, and trading on decentralized exchanges (DEXs).
The goal of WBNB is to improve scalability and interoperability within the BNB Chain. It connects the Binance environment with other blockchain networks such as Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, and Avalanche. This linkage boosts the utility and demand for both BNB and WBNB, allowing WBNB to serve as collateral across various ecosystems.
Wrapped BNB is tied to BNB, which was introduced by Binance. The exchange was established by Changpeng Zhao, commonly referred to as CZ, who serves as its CEO. Binance holds the top spot for trading volume among cryptocurrency exchanges. Born in China, CZ relocated to Canada with his relatives during his teenage years. He started Binance in 2017 and has since become a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry, known for his dedication to blockchain technology and digital assets.
Individuals can convert BNB into WBNB via a bridge, allowing them to engage with diverse DeFi protocols and DApps on BSC and additional chains. The same bridge service permits users to revert WBNB to BNB whenever they choose.
WBNB offers benefits such as minimal fees, rapid transactions, and the strong performance metrics of the BNB Chain. It also provides entry to numerous DeFi innovations and opportunities within the BNB Chain ecosystem. Because BNB and WBNB maintain a linked price, investors can stay exposed to BNB while taking part in DeFi activities.
Additionally, WBNB supports cross-chain bridging for use on various blockchains. Users gain access to the varied ecosystems of dApps and protocols on these networks, including gaming platforms, lending services, and DEXs. For instance, one might exchange WBNB for other ERC-20 tokens on PancakeSwap or Uniswap, or employ WBNB as collateral to secure stablecoin loans on Aave.
WBNB improves efficiency and liquidity by connecting BNB with other tokens. Users can wrap and unwrap their holdings without relying on trusted intermediaries, which lowers risks, delays, and transaction expenses.
Lastly, an equivalent amount of BNB locked in a smart contract on the original blockchain backs WBNB. This contract guarantees a constant 1:1 ratio between WBNB and BNB, ensuring users can redeem their tokens at any time. It also safeguards against supply manipulation, fraud, or double-spending. The wrapping and unwrapping procedures are transparent and can be verified by anyone on-chain.
Wrapped BNB (WBNB) serves as a representation of Binance Coin (BNB) across various blockchain networks. Unlike tokens with a capped limit, WBNB has no fixed supply. Instead, its circulating amount fluctuates based on how much BNB is utilized on other chains. Users generate new WBNB by locking their BNB in a smart contract on the native chain, and they remove WBNB from circulation by retrieving their original BNB from that same contract.
Because WBNB is not an independent project with its own developers, backers, or advisors, it does not feature any token allocation plans or vesting timelines. Consequently, there are no distribution schedules or lock-up periods for holders.
The token lacks any built-in inflation or deflation protocols. Its value remains pegged to BNB at a 1:1 exchange rate, allowing for conversion between the two at any time. Market dynamics regarding the supply and demand for both BNB and its wrapped counterpart dictate the price of WBNB.
Wrapped BNB (WBNB) operates as a BEP-20 token on the BNB Smart Chain and maintains a 1:1 backing with BNB. Although BNB originated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, it subsequently moved to its native network, the BNB Chain. The security of BNB relies on the Tendermint BFT consensus mechanism.
To purchase Wrapped BNB at the prevailing market price, you can use leading crypto exchanges such as PancakeSwap (V2), Jupiter, DODO (BSC), Biswap, and Swappi.
