Cryptopedia - Universal BTC
Universal BTC (uniBTC) is a novel restaking protocol developed by Bedrock that works in conjunction with the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol. It specifically supports wBTC on the Ethereum blockchain, enabling holders to generate yield from staking their BTC while retaining the security benefits of the Ethereum network.
Although the demand for BTC holders to earn yield securely has been acknowledged for some time, and Babylon’s protocol is expected to be a key solution for native BTC, there is also significant interest in handling BTC-pegged assets such as wBTC and BTCB. uniBTC addresses this by allowing wBTC users to earn BTC restaking rewards without needing to redeem their wrapped tokens. The protocol upholds Ethereum’s high security standards, safeguarding all staking and unstaking activities through several rounds of audited smart contracts. Leveraging Bedrock’s background in liquid staking and restaking, uniBTC presents a practical method for wrapped BTC users to accumulate multiple rewards by minting their tokens into uniBTC.
