Axie Infinity operates as a blockchain-based game focused on trading and combat, where players share ownership and operational control. Drawing inspiration from titles such as Pokémon and Tamagotchi, the platform enables users to gather, breed, nurture, fight with, and exchange digital creatures called Axies.

These creatures exhibit diverse appearances, utilizing over 500 distinct body parts categorized into aquatic, beast, bird, bug, plant, and reptile types. Each class features four rarity levels: common, rare, ultra rare, and legendary. Since Axies can possess any mix of these parts, they are often unique and highly variable.

Every Axie exists as a non-fungible token (NFT) with specific stats and strengths. They can compete in 3v3 battles, where victorious teams gain experience (exp) points to improve an Axie’s attributes or evolve its parts. Players may also breed Axies to create new offspring for personal use or sale on the Axie marketplace.

The ecosystem includes a dedicated governance token, Axie Infinity Shards (AXS). Holding AXS allows participation in major governance votes and provides input on the allocation of funds within the Axie Community Treasury.

Sky Mavis, a tech-oriented game studio with a workforce mainly located in Vietnam, launched Axie Infinity in 2018. The project was co-founded by Trung Nguyen and Aleksander Larsen.

Nguyen, who holds a BS in computer software engineering, serves as the platform's current CEO. Before establishing Axie Infinity, he worked as a software engineer at Anduin Transactions.

Aleksander Larsen, a former competitive gamer, is also a co-founder and acts as the COO. He has been involved in blockchain gaming since 2017. Previously, he served as the executive security officer for the Norwegian Government Security Organization, and he currently holds the position of Secretary of the Board of Directors at the Blockchain Game Alliance.

The Axie Infinity team comprises 25 full-time staff members, many of whom possess backgrounds in game development.

Every Axie is equipped with six body parts chosen from hundreds of possibilities, and each part comes with its own combat ability. This system creates virtually limitless diversity: while most creatures have modest stats, those with the optimal mix of parts can achieve impressive power levels.

To manage the Axie population, the game limits each creature to a maximum of seven breeding cycles, a restriction not found in all blockchain battling and breeding titles.

Players can use a dedicated mating hub to locate ideal partners for breeding, aiming to generate rare or strong offspring. The process requires Small Love Potion (SLP) tokens plus a fee of 0.005 ETH.

According to the team, AXS token holders will soon have the option to stake their assets for periodic rewards. However, unlike many other staking opportunities, claiming these rewards will require users to both vote and participate in gameplay.

Axie Infinity centers its gameplay on battling and breeding digital creatures known as Axies. The core loop involves purchasing Axies, engaging in combat with other users, breeding new ones, and listing them for sale on the marketplace. To enter a battle, a player must own an Axie and choose between Adventure Mode (PvE) or Arena Mode (PvP). While breeding is allowed, each individual Axie has a strict limit of 7 breeds.

The game world, Lunacia, serves as the home for these creatures and is split into tokenized land plots. Players can gather resources on these plots and improve them. Both Axies and land parcels are tradable on the marketplace.

Community involvement is a central pillar, with members contributing to governance and creating content. The developers have implemented specific mechanics to set the game apart from similar titles, such as built-in population control. Additionally, the diverse attribute combinations create a wide variety of Axies, which drives demand among both gamers and collectors of rare NFTs.

To address scalability issues, the team launched Ronin Network, a sidechain built on Ethereum. This network facilitates instant transactions without relying on the main Ethereum blockchain. Users can securely hold AXS tokens and collectible NFTs in either Ethereum or Ronin wallets, and they may transfer tokens from an Ethereum wallet to a Ronin wallet using the Ronin Bridge.

The Axie Infinity Shard (AXS), which serves as the core utility token for the Axie Infinity game, debuted in November 2020. This asset enables users to purchase, trade, and earn rewards through gameplay, with top seasonal performers receiving additional AXS incentives. Furthermore, it functions as a governance instrument, empowering holders to cast votes on game modifications and guide the platform's development.

The maximum supply is capped at 270 million tokens. By mid-November 2020, approximately 53.5 million of these were in circulation.

Distribution of the total supply includes:

• 4% sold via private sale
• 29% reserved for staking rewards
• 20% designated for the play-to-earn pool
• 21% assigned to the team

According to Binance Research, the existing release schedule suggests that the entire 100% of AXS tokens will be in circulation by early 2026.

The Axie Infinity (AXS) token operates as an ERC-20 asset on the Ethereum blockchain, meaning its security relies on Ethereum’s proof-of-work (POW) consensus model.

Sky Mavis, the studio responsible for Axie Infinity, is developing Ronin, a custom sidechain tailored specifically for the game. This infrastructure aims to facilitate scaling, lower gas costs, and provide near-instant transaction confirmations. In early 2021, the project plans to move its NFT assets—such as Axies, Land, and other in-game items—from the Loom Network to this new Ronin sidechain.

As of October 2021, traders can access Axie Infinity (AXS) on many exchange platforms. Major venues include Binance, Huobi Global, Coinbase, Bithumb, KuCoin, Gate.io, and Kraken.

The connection with Axie Infinity Smooth Love Potion has resulted in various trading pairs, such as SLP to ETH and SLP to BNB. There is also notable demand for SLP to PHP in the Philippines, SLP to AUD in Australia, and SLP to EUR in Europe.

AXS itself trades against several assets, with common pairs being AXS/USDT, AXS/BTC, AXS/BUSD, and AXS/BNB. Growing popularity has spurred interest in AXS to PHP, AXS to AUD, and AXS to EUR.

The game enables users to generate tokens through diverse gameplay elements. Players can breed, raise, and trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs) known as Axie creatures. These digital pets possess specific classes, traits, and attributes. They are collectible items that can be sold on the P2P Axie in-game marketplace.

An Axie’s rarity and features are defined by its stats, class, and body parts. Central to the experience are unique ability cards linked to these characteristic configurations. Every Axie is a distinct NFT possessed and managed by its owner.

Axie Infinity stands as one of the early adopters of the Play-to-Earn (P2E) model, allowing gamers to acquire crypto and NFTs via play. While the online game involves turn-based combat, the key distinction is that players hold authority over their characters, land plots, resources, and other universe items. Consequently, Axie Infinity functions as an open digital world with a player-controlled economy.

NFTs verify ownership of these unique digital assets and in-game items, serving as proof of property rights. Therefore, users may sell their Axies to others or keep them safe in crypto wallets such as Trust Wallet, Binance Chain Wallet, or the Ronin Wallet, which was created specifically for Axie Infinity.
