The Status network aims to function as a fully decentralized communication platform, seeking to eliminate third-party intermediaries and reduce potential attack surfaces for malicious entities over time.
Communication on the platform is uncensored and unblocked, offering pseudo-anonymity if the user selects that setting. The Status wallet allows users to send, store, and receive tokens and cryptocurrencies while keeping private keys hidden. When browsing Web3, no third parties can access the end user’s data or browsing history.
A user’s identity begins with a cryptographic keypair generated locally and secured by a password. For peer-to-peer (P2P) messaging, Status employs the Waku protocol, which depends on a peer network to route messages. The system features default end-to-end encryption and perfect forward secrecy, utilizing the X3DH and Double Ratchet specifications from Open Whisper Systems. Funds are held in a non-custodial wallet, and a signing phrase is included to guard against phishing attempts.
