ZetaChain operates as a Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchain constructed using the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint consensus mechanism. It enables decentralized, trustless, permissionless, transparent, and efficient connections to external blockchains such as Ethereum, BSC, Solana, Avalanche, Terra, and Bitcoin, as well as layers like Polygon, Optimism, and Arbitrum, without relying on a single point of failure.
The network’s security architecture relies on three components: validators, observers, and signers. Validators produce blocks and earn rewards based on their bonded staking coins. Observers achieve consensus regarding states and events on external chains. Signers manage standard ECDSA/EdDSA keys in a distributed manner to sign messages for ZetaChain. The system employs the GG20 leaderless Threshold Signature Scheme (TSS) for distributed key generation and signing, ensuring that no individual node or person ever holds the complete private key. Every inbound and outbound transaction, along with state-change decisions, is recorded in ZetaChain blocks, making them immutable, verifiable, available, and fully transparent.
