Cryptopedia - Real Brasilero
wBRL is a stablecoin with a 1:1 peg to the Brazilian real (BRL), issued by a subsidiary of Ripio, a Latin American crypto firm active since 2013. It belongs to Ripio’s wFiat collection, which comprises six fully collateralized stablecoins tied to local currencies: the Argentine peso (wARS), Brazilian real (wBRL), Mexican peso (wMXN), Colombian peso (wCOP), Peruvian sol (wPEN), and Chilean peso (wCLP). The prefix "w" indicates a wrapped token meant to keep parity with its reference currency, supported by liquid assets in that same currency.
Every wBRL token aims to represent one Brazilian real held in reserve. Minting occurs upon fiat deposit, while redemption happens when holders withdraw, meaning the circulating supply mirrors the backing reserves instead of adhering to a fixed emission or vesting timeline. This setup enables users to store and move BRL-denominated value on-chain without switching to US dollar-based assets.
The ERC-20 token operates on six EVM-compatible networks: Ethereum, Base, World Chain, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, and Gnosis Chain, utilizing the same contract address on each. The initial on-chain minting of wBRL occurred on World Chain. Market making is currently live on Uniswap on World Chain, and the token is accessible via Ripio Exchange through integrated on/off-ramp services.
Designed for multiple purposes, the token allows holders to save or hedge in local currency, transfer funds between wallets, and pay merchants or peers. Since value transfers happen on-chain and fiat conversion only takes place at the endpoints, wBRL can facilitate cross-border remittances and foreign-exchange transactions at lower costs than traditional methods. In decentralized finance, it can be traded, provided as liquidity, or used as collateral for lending and borrowing on supported networks. For enterprises and institutions, it aids in local-currency treasury management, rebalancing, and B2B on/off-ramp activities.
Ripio serves retail and business clients in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile. Founded in 2013, the company has secured investment from Digital Currency Group, Pantera Capital, Draper Ventures, and others. The wFiat stablecoins were rolled out in stages during 2025, starting with wARS, wBRL, wMXN, and wCOP, then adding wPEN and wCLP to finish the six-currency regional set. Distribution involves integration with World App and collaborations with regional financial platforms.
Ripio states that near-term objectives include deploying stablecoin contracts on more EVM chains, launching bridges to enhance cross-chain liquidity and treasury rebalancing, and seeking integrations with self-custody wallets and DeFi protocols to ensure wFiat tokens are accepted as local-currency stablecoins for swaps, lending, and on/off-ramps. Regarding payments, the stated aim is to enable merchant acceptance, QR-based payments, and consumer wallet usage, allowing users to hold and spend in their local unit of account.
