PancakeSwap began on the BNB Chain, enabling users to swap tokens without relying on a centralized exchange. The platform offers a wide range of features, including:
- A token swap exchange
- Yield farming for earning rewards
- Syrup pools for staking CAKE tokens
- Ethereum liquid staking (wBETH) and simple staking options
- The Pancake Protectors game
- A v3 position manager (a new feature)
- A prediction market
- Initial Farm Offering (IFO) token launches
- A bridge for moving CAKE to Ethereum and Aptos
- A lottery system
- An NFT marketplace
The project develops rapidly, frequently releasing new products. In April 2023, the community voted to adopt a deflationary model known as "Ultrasound CAKE." By passing the CAKE Tokenomics v2.5 proposal, the protocol established a framework that merges real yield (which does not affect supply) with lower token emissions. Currently, more than 102% of newly minted CAKE is burned each week. This strategy aims to support emissions over multiple years and encourage users to lock their CAKE, potentially increasing the token's long-term value.
An anonymous group referred to as “Chefs” operates within the PancakeSwap “Kitchen.” The code is open-source and has undergone audits by respected security firms such as Peckshield and Slowmist.
Despite the bear market affecting the protocol’s total value locked (TVL) and trading volume, PancakeSwap maintains an annualized revenue of $27 million, with 42% of CAKE currently staked.
