While Illuvium incorporates blockchain technology, it functions primarily as a complete video game. Users access it via a downloadable desktop application, which is supported by various DeFi tools such as a decentralized exchange and a yield farm.
In the game, players explore the world to fight other users and Illuvials, complete daily tasks and quests, and engage with a shared narrative. During this process, they gather Illuvials, creatures whose value, usefulness, and rarity depend on specific traits. These primary traits include:
- Classes: Empath, Fighter, Guardian, Rogue, and Psion.
- Affinities: Air, Earth, Fire, Nature, and Water.
Beyond these key characteristics, each Illuvial possesses numerous other stats that influence combat performance, such as savagery, attack speed, and attack damage. Victories make Illuvials stronger, and they can be improved using in-game items or upgraded to an “ascended” state that utilizes two affinities simultaneously.
Every Illuvial exists as a unique non-fungible token (NFT). They are available for trading on outside platforms and the gas-free IlluviDEX. Players can also fuse them to create more powerful versions. Variants include normal, holographic, and dark holographic, with the latter two being significantly rarer.
The project plans to generate income mainly through in-game sales of cosmetics, crafting parts, items, and shard curing. The team states that 100% of this revenue will be returned to ILV token stakers as rewards via an ILV buyback mechanism.
