Developed by Kingdom Studios, DeFi Kingdoms blends decentralized finance mechanics with a fantasy pixel-art gaming experience. The JEWEL token serves as the native gas currency on DFK Chain and supports staking, governance, and in-game utilities. With a capped supply of 125 million tokens, the asset aims to become deflationary through network usage and voluntary locking mechanisms.
DeFi Kingdoms operates as a web-based blockchain title that integrates various decentralized finance components into an engaging experience. The game blends features such as a decentralized exchange, an NFT marketplace, and liquidity pool options within a fantasy pixel-art aesthetic, establishing its signature mix of DeFi mechanics and retro gaming style. Through this approach, the development team aims to “embrace the full potential of the blockchain in game form” while fostering synergies between gaming and decentralized finance.
The project first went live on Harmony in August 2021. Later, in March 2022, it introduced the Crystalvale realm on DFK Chain, which is an Avalanche Subnet. Subsequently, in December 2022, the Serendale realm was migrated to the Klaytn blockchain.
DeFi Kingdoms distinguishes itself by seamlessly blending DeFi mechanics with gaming elements, creating a more organic experience than many other titles attempting similar integrations. This unique feel is supported by several core features.
The platform’s decentralized exchange operates on the Uniswap V2 Protocol, enabling users to swap tokens and act as liquidity providers to collect fees from these swaps.
Additionally, players can stake their LP tokens in The Gardens. Here, they earn tokens used to purchase rare NFTs and other goods. The Gardens offer a distinct visual interface where players manage various plants and crops; tending to and harvesting these yields rewards that are stored in the storehouse. Each garden corresponds to a specific LP pairing.
Following the December 2022 updates to DeFi Kingdoms tokenomics, JEWEL serves as a utility and ecosystem token utilized across realms. It functions as the native gas token on DFK Chain and supports liquidity pooling, staking for governance rights, fee distribution, and in-game Power-Ups.
The relaunch of DeFi Kingdoms: Serendale on Klaytn adjusted the tokenomics by lowering the maximum supply from 500 million tokens to 125 million tokens, all of which have already been minted. Because of gas usage on DFK Chain and burns from in-game activities, the total supply is set to decrease, rendering JEWEL deflationary. Additionally, the circulating supply is reduced when players voluntarily lock JEWEL to receive governance tokens, adhering to Curve's veToken model.
Kingdom Studios is responsible for the development and maintenance of DeFi Kingdoms. Heroes in DeFi Kingdoms exceed typical NFTs because they function as playable characters capable of earning token rewards and improving their statistics. As a central element of the game, these Heroes are deployed for quests and combat across various modes, such as the DFK Duel minigame. Transactions for Heroes occur in The Tavern, while new ones can be summoned at the Portal by merging genes from current Heroes to generate a completely new, possibly very rare, NFT. Moreover, players may outfit their Heroes with Pets and assorted Equipment NFTs, granting them unique passive and active skills. By undertaking quests, Heroes can collect in-game materials, boost farming output from the Gardens, and use Mining Heroes to access those rewards sooner.
Land Plots are also purchasable within DeFi Kingdoms. These plots vary by location, which determines the amount of resources they yield. In the future, players will have the ability to construct buildings on their land to enhance Hero bonuses. Land ownership will also allow players to discover new valuable resources applicable to Crafting and other game mechanics.
