Cryptopedia - Midnight
Midnight is a next-generation blockchain created by Charles Hoskinson, who co-founded Ethereum and established Cardano. It employs zero-knowledge (“ZK”) proof technology to provide utility while maintaining data protection and ownership, allowing applications to secure user, commercial, and transaction data along with metadata. The platform features a new architecture intended to fix privacy limitations in current public blockchains, supporting apps that need a mix of privacy and disclosure. The Midnight protocol merges a ZK proofs-based, public-private dual-state ledger for data security with a composite, dual-component tokenomics model for metadata protection.
The system brings key innovations focused on programmable privacy, regulatory compliance, and ease for developers. It relies on a two-part token structure: NIGHT, which serves as a utility token, and DUST, a shielded, decaying, non-transferable resource that facilitates metadata-shielded transactions.
Midnight enables composability, fee abstraction, and selective disclosure within zero-knowledge circuits, helping privacy-focused applications satisfy business and legal standards. Builders use a TypeScript-based smart contract framework to interact with the protocol, making it approachable for mainstream developers while still handling complex cryptographic logic.
The ZK execution engine draws from Kachina research and utilizes Pluto-Eris curves to generate BLS-type proofs, providing scalable, composable privacy at the protocol level. The roadmap lists plans for ZSwap, a mechanism for private exchanges, and integration with the Polkadot SDK (Substrate) to allow modular deployment of hybrid dApps.
Operating within the Privacy Enhancing Technology sector, Midnight supports applications requiring privacy, selective disclosure, and regulatory adherence in areas including DeFi, AI, identity solutions, governance, and enterprise workflows.
