Chromia operates as a modular, relational Layer-1 blockchain built to support the creation of decentralized applications that are both scalable and customizable. The network accommodates standalone apps, provides EVM-compatible Layer-2 improvements, and functions as a decentralized infrastructure foundation for data-heavy sectors like gaming and AI. Its native cryptocurrency, CHR, entered the market in May 2019.

Chromia distinguishes itself through a relational blockchain architecture that facilitates complex, data-heavy applications which are often costly or challenging to execute on conventional blockchains. Its modular framework permits developers to incorporate optional components called Extensions, offering on-chain capabilities such as vectorized data handling, AI inference, and oracles.

The platform is particularly suited for AI development thanks to several key innovations. The Mimir Mainnet Upgrade, launched in March 2025, introduced the Vector Database Extension to manage vectorized data on-chain, a critical requirement for AI tools. This update also added the AI Inference Extension, which plans to enable the hosting of Large Language Models (LLMs) directly on network nodes, thereby decreasing dependence on centralized providers. Furthermore, Chromia’s continued integration with LangChain, a prominent AI agent framework, broadens support for decentralized intelligent apps. The combination of its relational database structure and independent dapp chains creates a scalable, developer-centric environment for efficient and affordable AI solutions.

Additionally, Chromia acts as an interoperable enhancement layer for Ethereum and other EVM-compatible chains. Projects based on EVM can leverage Chromia to create companion dApps or store intricate, structured metadata, lessening their reliance on centralized alternatives.

Each application on Chromia operates on its own separate blockchain. This setup allows every dApp to scale independently while establishing its own governance, rules, and fee structures for maximum customization and scalability.

Chromia employs an economic model similar to traditional web hosting. Deployers pay CHR tokens to cover hosting expenses, granting them unlimited access to their chain’s resources. This approach not only provides gas-free interactions for end users but also gives projects predictable costs and no per-transaction fees when using their chain for infrastructure.

Rell is the specialized programming language for Chromia development. It is tailored to align naturally with the platform’s database-style blockchain, enabling developers to construct secure and efficient applications more quickly. By utilizing familiar coding concepts, Rell helps developers begin building without facing a steep learning curve.

Henrik Hjelte, Alex Mizrahi, and Or Perelman co-founded Chromia. These leaders possess extensive background from the blockchain sector’s inception, having contributed to early initiatives like Colored Coins and Proof of Stake consensus mechanisms.

Although the original founders stay engaged, Chromia has grown into a worldwide effort supported by an expanding, varied team. Currently, numerous researchers, developers, and ecosystem collaborators globally are working to build infrastructure and applications on the network.

Chromia has completed three funding rounds to date:

• The initial round was a private sale in 2018, securing $3 million from investors including NGC Ventures, FBG Capital, JRR Crypto, DFG Capital (Dynamic Fintech Group), OK Blockchain Capital (OK Group’s investment arm), AlphaBit Fund (ABCFund), LD Capital (LD Investments), Du Capital (DuCapital), Bitrise Capital Partners (Bitrise Capital), Chaince Capital Partners (Chaince Labs), and Waterdrip Capital Partners (Waterdrip Capital).
• The second round occurred in 2019 as a public sale via KuCoin Spotlight, a platform for highlighting quality blockchain projects, raising $2.5 million.
• The third round was a seed investment in 2019 from Binance Labs, the venture branch of Binance, for an undisclosed sum.

Furthermore, Animoca Brands, a major global publisher and developer of blockchain gaming platforms and mobile games, made a strategic investment in Chromia in 2020.
