Indigo Protocol’s iBTC functions as a synthetic asset that provides on-chain exposure to Bitcoin’s price within a decentralized finance (DeFi) setting. This structure enables participants to interact with Bitcoin’s market performance without actually holding the cryptocurrency. Built on the Cardano blockchain, the system allows users to access Bitcoin’s price action by using ADA as collateral.
Users can acquire iBTC through two primary methods: buying it directly on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) or minting it via the Indigo Protocol by locking up ADA. This dual pathway offers flexibility to suit various user strategies and preferences.
To mint iBTC, individuals must deposit ADA into a Collateralized Debt Position (CDP) while maintaining a value above the Minimum Collateralization Ratio (MCR). This over-collateralization requirement protects the protocol’s stability and the integrity of the minted iBTC. If the value of the ADA collateral nears the MCR threshold, users may deposit additional ADA to secure their position. Should the collateral value drop below the MCR, the protocol’s Stability Pool steps in to swap the user’s ADA for iBTC, thereby preserving the over-collateralized state.
A key characteristic of the Indigo Protocol is its CDP Liquid Staking feature, which permits users to earn ADA staking rewards even while their ADA is locked as collateral. This capability adds utility to iBTC and supports advanced trading strategies that leverage these staking yields.
Beyond tracking Bitcoin’s price, iBTC serves multiple purposes. It can act as collateral for loans and passive income opportunities, facilitate cross-border payments, function in spot trading pairs, and be used as collateral within iBTC vaults.
The Indigo DAO governs iBTC parameters, such as changes to the MCR, through a democratic process. This community-led management helps keep the protocol adaptable to market shifts and user requirements, supporting a resilient ecosystem for synthetic assets on Cardano.
Prior to using iBTC or other synthetic assets, users should perform comprehensive research to fully grasp the associated risks and potential opportunities.
